Name:Jean Fobrere
Location:Las Vegas, Nevada, United States
He was born Claude Fobrere in Paris in 1864, both parents avatars of hope. A singularly gifted child of Pandora, Claude turned not to magic but to music with his power. A virtuoso in both his art and his power as a medium (and a skill in foresight so great he was long suspected of being a master magician), Claude was both a respected composer and a singer with the Paris Opera. In his downtime, he worked without pay, serving the spirits that haunted him, pleading for help.

He was touched, it seemed, with all the goodwill of the gods...until he met the woman of his dreams.

Ilisa Duvaine was a soprano with the opera, and though she was betrothed to one of the theater's many generous and wealthy patrons, Claude fell helplessly in love with her. She returned his affection, though he swore not to pursue her, and soon the two found themselves engaged in a passionate affair that brought them face to face with something far worse than discovery: Ilisa's intended was touched by Darkness.

It was not the task of dispatching him that did him harm. Though his wounds were grievous, he persevered. Though the touch of evil weakened him, he stayed strong. It was not until Ilisa, ignorant of what was wrong, found him over her fiancee's mangled body that he suffered his greatest blow. Distraught, and in the throes of despair, she pulled the dagger from her beloved's chest and drove it into his heart.

It should have been the end, as avatars have no souls...but not when one's power is that which allows one to glimpse the dead.

Forgetting himself in Death, Claude saw the truth of his kind: on the shores of the river Styx, he watched others of his kind confronted with the ferryman Charon, without fare and no idea they weren't human. Once rejected, he saw them fade forever into the shadows of the underworld...and much to his surprise, when Charon came for him found that his fare had already been paid.

Just as one peerless, talented beauty had captured his gaze, so had his own talent and fair face caught the eye of Hades himself. Met by the god of death, a bargain was struck for Claude's very life: there were others of his kind in need of special protection and guidance. In exchange for a soul and a chance to be reborn, Claude swore his eternal allegiance to Hades and returned to the world as Jean Fobrere, blessed with immortality in which to serve and all the power of his previous lifetime.

He did not realize that the despair which took his life would leave him hideously scarred, beautiful face deformed so that not even modern medicine could help him. He did not realize that, in serving death, he would find it easier to do things no avatar was capable of...dark and despicable things.

And he did not realize that, on his death, his beloved Ilisa had been carrying his child...a son who would father a line of lost avatars, surviving through to the modern age with the birth of Cassandra Lowndes.
